There's a lot to like about these incredibly coloured Regent Bowerbirds, and it's not just their spectacular plumage. Although that is definitely a major drawcard, especially when they can be such obliging subjects!
This species is the emblem of the magnificent O'Reilly's Rainforest Retreat, nestled high amongst the mountains of Lamington National Park, about an hour & a half south-west of the Gold Coast. Each morning during Spring, several of these Regent Bowerbirds, along with numerous Satin Bowerbird, Crimson Rosella, Australian King-Parrot, and Lewin's Honeyeater, flock to the main entrance of the retreat looking for a sweet sultana snack on offer from the staff for the morning bird walk. It's quite a spectacle as the birds will often land on the heads and shoulders of guests as they try to get the next fruit on offer. As a result, many of the birds around the retreat are not shy of humans at all - in fact they will often actively fly in looking for snacks.
To create this image, I picked a location with a heavily shadowed background and positioned myself in a spot where the birds would receive minimal natural light on their plumage (aided by overcast conditions, softening the light). I underexposed the shot using high shutter speeds, enabling the blending of the birds jet-black plumage with the dark background, whilst still capturing the action.
